Keeler: If Nuggets star Nikola Jokic got fined, why was Suns owner Mat Ishbia let off the NBA’s hook? We’d say to throw the book at Mat Ishbia, but who are we kidding? He’d probably just cradle the thing in his lap and refuse to give it back.“As Nikola (Jokic) said, that’s not an owner in the stands,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone offered Monday during a brief media scrum when asked about Ishbia, the Suns’ handsy governor. “He’s a fan. I mean, we don’t designate who’s in the stands.”If any other fan held onto a game ball and got all keep-away with the rock during a heated postseason game while a player was trying to retrieve it to restart the action, you know what happens? They’re escorted from the arena and banned for the rest of the series. So if Joe Dumars, commissioner Adam Silver and the rest of the NBA wingtips really want to close the book on the case of Jokic v. Ishbia before Game 5 Tuesday night at Ball Arena, how ’bout this:Either a) the Suns owner pays the Joker’s $25,000 fine as recompense for dragging us all down this rabbit hole to begin wit...

Denver’s “junker” vehicle law amended to include pause for people living in cars The Denver City Council tweaked a new law aimed at giving police and parking enforcement officials more power to ticket and impound RVs, trailers, semis and damaged or abandoned “junker” vehicles on city streets on Monday. The last-second adjustment, put forth by Councilman Paul Kashmann, requires city officials to provide an additional 48 hours of notice before a vehicle is impounded if they believe that people are living in that vehicle or using it for short-term shelter. The amendment passed unanimously before the amended bill passed 11-1 with Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca voting no.The 48-hour delay was meant to provide time for city officials to reach out to potentially homeless vehicle owners and assuage concerns about the wider discretion the new law provides city officials to ticket and impound large or damaged vehicles parked on city streets. But opponents still see the changes the bill made to the city code as tools for targeting unhoused people and low-income resi...

New study illuminates fentanyl crisis' youngest victims (KRON) -- The first study looking into how many children have died from fentanyl poisonings nationwide was released Monday with heartbreaking numbers. In 2021, almost 70,000 Americans died from overdosing on fentanyl. Fentanyl poisoning deaths surged among children as well. "Fentanyl was responsible for the deaths of 40 infants, and 93 children aged 1 to 4 years (in 2021)," the new study by JAMA Pediatrics states. Between ages 0-19, 1,557 victims died that year."Little is known about the extent to which the fentanyl crisis has affected children since the opioid epidemic began nearly 25 years ago," the study's authors noted. Researchers looked for answers by compiling statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research's database. They identified opioid deaths between 1999 and 2021 for victims ranging between 0 and 19 years old.Fentanyl was implicated in 5,194 of 13,861 (37.5%) fatal pediatric opioid poisonings between 19...
