GOP lawmakers to vote on expelling Democrats in gun protest

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:28:26 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee’s GOP-dominated House is preparing to vote Thursday on whether to expel three Democratic members for their demonstration calling for gun control following the Nashville school shooting, an extraordinary move that the chamber has used only a handful of times since the Civil War.Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson are the subjects of the ouster vote. Last week, the trio approached the front of the chamber floor and chanted back and forth with gun control supporters who packed the gallery days after six people, including three children, were fatally shot at The Covenant School in Nashville.Their possible expulsion has once again thrust Tennessee into the national spotlight, underscoring not only the ability of the Republican supermajority to silence opponents, but also its increasing willingness to do so. The move sends a chilling message just as lawmakers grapple with how to respond to the devastating shooting.Even before the House p...

In a wild season of comings and goings at Chelsea, Frank Lampard’s out-of-the-blue return to Stamford Bridge is among the most improbable of the lot.Lampard, Chelsea’s record scorer and one of its greatest ever players, was hired as interim manager until the end of the season on Thursday to give the club time to find a permanent replacement for the fired Graham Potter. It will be Lampard’s second spell as Chelsea manager — he was fired in January 2021 after 18 months in charge and replaced by Thomas Tuchel — and said it was an “easy decision” to come back.“This is my club,” he said at a hastily arranged news conference at Chelsea’s training base.“I’m confident in myself, I have a good understanding in the squad — of course I’ve worked with a lot of them before — but also the training ground, the stadium, the fans, what Chelsea fans want, and I’ll do my utmost to give them what they want.”Lampard’s first spell coaching Chelsea came before the arrival of club’s curren...

ORLANDO, Fla. (WSVN) – A lesson plan that included having students write their own obituaries has cost a psychology teacher his job at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando.Jeffrey Keene, said there was going to be an active shooter drill at the school and thought he could tie it into a lesson about safety and reflection on what’s important. Keene asked the students, “If they died 24 hours from now, what would they do differently than they did yesterday?” During his first-period class, a student got upset and asked to speak to a counselor, shortly after a supervisor came to observe his lecture during the second period.“I put a disclaimer on the bottom of the lesson saying this is in no way to upset you,” Keen said. He tried to example himself to the supervisor but was shut down. Keene said his intention was never to stress his students out. “When they said you have the option to resign without violating your contract, I said, ‘I didn’t do anyt...

Overfishing threatens a way of life in the Bahamas

FREEPORT, Bahamas (AP) — Tereha Davis, whose family has fished for conch from waters around the Bahamas for five generations, remembers when she could walk into the water from the beach and pick up the marine snails from the seabed. But in recent years, Davis, 49, and conch fishers like her have had to go further and further from shore – sometimes as far as 30 miles – to find the mollusks that Bahamians eat fried, stewed, smoked and raw and are a pillar of the island nation’s economy and tourism industry.Scientists, international conservationists and government officials have sounded the alarm that the conch population is fading due to overfishing, and a food central to Bahamians’ diet and identity could cease to be commercially viable in as little as six years.“When I was a child, we never had to go that far to get conch,” said Davis, speaking at a Freeport market where she sold her catch. “Without conch, what are we supposed to do?”Conch’s potential demise reflect...

BRUSSELS — A landmark trade and investment pact sealed by the EU and China in recent years is effectively dead.On Thursday, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, who is in Beijing to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping, gave her strongest signal yet that the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) deal is dead in the water as the pact had not even been discussed.“The Comprehensive Agreement on Investment did not come up,” she told a press conference following her meeting with the Chinese president. “You know our position. We started negotiations round about 10 years ago and concluded the comprehensive agreement on investment two years ago. A lot has happened since then,” she said, including deterioration in market access for EU companies in the Chinese market.Von der Leyen had made similar comments last week in a keynote speech on China in Brussels, saying the EU needs to “reassess” the pact.“Our position is that we do have to reassess the Comprehensive Agreement...
