Ask Amy: My mom’s lie about my high school graduation was the last straw Dear Amy: I have a very difficult and stressful relationship with my mother, and I don’t know what to do about it.I am 19 years old. My mother is an addict and an alcoholic, and she missed out on much of my early childhood years because of it.When I was around 8, she finally sobered up, but she still has a multitude of psychological problems, most likely stemming from years of substance abuse, and she never really grew up.She only thought about herself. She hurt me over and over again. She put her maternal duties aside and wasn’t there for me.Finally, I had enough when she missed my high school graduation last year. She lied to me about why she had missed it (turns out she was at home the whole time).Related ArticlesAdvice | Ask Amy: I turned down the job because of the interviewer’s question (and the no-pants thing) Advice | Ask Amy: After all my work, she gave me $20. Harriette Cole: When I got home, I saw he had read my journals and he was mad DEAR HARRIETTE: I keep a journal. I have for decades. It’s the way that I get my emotions out and deal with my issues. In the past, any boyfriend I’ve had knew that my journals were off-limits. I trusted that nobody would look at them. Well, that changed recently. My relatively new boyfriend was at my house one afternoon when I wasn’t there. When I got home, I saw that he had gone through my journals. Worse, he confronted me about something he read in one of them. It wasn’t about him. It was about a previous relationship and some of the details of what went wrong. He read a particularly raw entry and got mad at me about the content. I immediately threw him out, telling him he had broken a confidence and it was over. To me, that was a clear violation of trust.I am unwilling to stop journaling in order to protect myself from his prying eyes, nor am I willing to talk to my boyfriend about my past relationships, so what else is left? That’s why I dumped him.He...
