Civic Takes its Duty to Rock Seriously

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:34:25 GMT

In these trying times, the power of adrenalin-fueled proto-punk cannot be underestimated. Melbourne Australia’s Civic serve it up on record and on stage. With Taken By Force, their release on ATO Records from earlier this year earning new fans, the band is building on its following with a U.S. tour (their first time playing here).Expect garage-y abandon and vociferous flair in the live setting as the quartet presents its fusion of heavy guitars and growling vocals on introspective numbers about the life changes we all go through and hopefully grow from. The band is in the midst of its evolution, like we all are, really. Check out their new single, “Hourglass,” (which they’re sure to play at the LA show) for a revved run-through before the gig. Renovated San Jose park honors California’s ‘Prune King’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:34:25 GMT

It’s a real shame that Leonard McKay didn’t live to see Pellier Park finally reopen Wednesday. The longtime San Jose historian and member of the historical society E Clampus Vitus — along with Jim Arbuckle — was the driving force behind building a city park to honor Louis Pellier, who was the renowned “Prune King” of California back in the late 1800s.McKay and Arbuckle raised money for the park on a half-acre of land at Terraine and St. James streets downtown — once the site of the Pellier house and the City Gardens, a nursery managed by Pellier and his brothers, Pierre and Jean. The red-shirted members of E Clampus Vitus’ Mountain Charlie Chapter 1850 volunteered $70,000 in labor — that’s 1970s dollars — to build the park, which originally was dedicated for San Jose’s 200th birthday in 1977.A single French prune tree is one of the features of the rnovated Pellier Park, now open after a public ceremony, Wednesda...

By Chris Megerian and Seung Min Kim | Associated PressWASHINGTON — President Joe Biden will deliver a rare Oval Office address Thursday night as he prepares to ask for additional billions of dollars in military assistance for Israel and Ukraine, deepening American involvement in two very different, unpredictable and bloody foreign conflicts. The speech will be an opportunity for Biden to argue that the United States has an obligation — and a national security interest — in both places. And it’s a chance for him to publicly lobby lawmakers for the money. The funding request, expected to be formally unveiled on Friday, is likely to be around $100 billion over the next year, according to people directly familiar with the proposal who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The total figure includes some money for Taiwan’s defense and for managing the flow of migrants at the southern border with Mexico.Biden hopes that combining all of these issues into one pi...

The U.S. government may be complicit under international law in Israel’s unfolding genocide of the Palestinian people, a group of legal scholars warned the Biden administration and the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.Lawyers at the Center for Constitutional Rights issued the dire warning to President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in a 44-page emergency brief on Wednesday, on the heels of Biden’s trip to the Middle East.
